(County Wicklow)
Glendalough round tower is approximately 30 metres high. Originally built as a bell-tower (belfry), it had six timber floors connected by ladders.
"A tall, round tower (at Glendalough) rises above the trees at the lakeside, one of those towers peculiar to Ireland, and built nearly 1,000 years ago as a belfry and refuge from the Danes. The doors are high up in these towers, so that refugees could pull up the ladder after them, and feel secure from attack."
